Encapsulating 275 square miles of gypsum sand dunes, White Sands National Monument offers unique scenery and amazing dunes fun. An eight mile drive into the heart of the dunes affords unique sights and the road is enhanced with many vehicle pullouts and informative signs that tell more about the park's history and its dunes. The most popular activities, however, take place right on the sand. Hiking is a challenging and exciting way to explore the park, and dune sledding is always a hit with all ages, just bring a sled with you when you visit. Camping is not allowed in the dunes, but there are many nearby state and national parks as well as the town of Alamogordo that offer plenty of overnighting possibilities. The monument is surrounded by the Holloman Air Force Base and is close to the White Sands Missile Range, located just a miles southwest of Alamogordo.
